The 5th European Board Examination will be held on Friday June 7, 2013 in conjunction with the 23rd Meeting of the European Neurological Society in Barcelona, Spain. Until 2012 the EBN Examination has been restricted to countries of the EU or EEA, Canada, USA and Turkey. From 2013 onwards candidates from all over the world will be accepted for the examination. Candidates from EU/EEA countries need to provide proof by the respective national authority that they are already board certified or eligible for board certification or eligible to sit a national exit examination (if implemented in that country). Non EU/EEA candidates must present a proof of a national accreditation as a neurologist and certification of their training, authenticity of the documents needs to be confirmed by an official body. All documents have to be in English (original or authorized translation).

In case of passing successfully the examination, candidates from the EU and EEA will be conferred the title “Fellow of the European Board of Neurology” whereas candidates from other countries will be awarded a “Diploma of the European Board of Neurology”. Passing the European Board Examination in Neurology is a sign of excellence, without legal consequences like the right to practice as a neurologist in the EU or elsewhere. In some European states the EBN examination is considered as equivalent to the national examination. For participants trained in non- EU/EEA states, a passed EBN exam does not imply a legal consequence like obtaining a work permit. The structure of the EBN examination will be partially changed from 2013. The first part is unchanged and will consist of 120 MCQs, with one single best answer per question as previously. In the second part the oral case vignettes will be replaced by an extended matching question (EMQ) test done in writing, and the previously optional oral presentation of an own case history, scientific work or other own achievements related to neurology will be a mandatory part of the examination. This free presentation will be given to a faculty consisting of Examination Committee members. It is a 5 minutes oral presentation without audiovisual support. Applications should be done through www.uems-neuroboard.org until the end of March 2013. For candidates from EU or EEA member countries and Turkey the examination fee is € 600.- , for non EU/EEA persons it is € 750,-. The fee has to be paid upon acceptance as a candidate. Candidates from European Board of Neurology accredited training centers are eligible for a fee reduction of 30%.
