Botulinum Toxin in Neurological Practice
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Course Description
Despite increasingly widespread use of botulinum toxins (BoNT) treatment for neurological disorders, there is no recognized or regularly available training scheme in most European countries. Several European guidelines recommend formal training, but available training is haphazard and is rarely organized by non-pharmaceutical entities. This course was developed by MDS to address that gap.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to accomplish the following:

  • Explain a treatment plan for a movement disorders patient using botulinum toxin, including which toxin to use and why, dosing, and potential adverse effects
  • Understand and explain the role of botulinum toxin injections in the management of movement disorders
  • Describe the technique of injection, including the use of EMG and/or ES for muscle localization in movement disorders characterized by excessive muscle activity
  • Explain the side effects of botulinum toxin injections in specific body regions
  • Describe a treatment plan that incorporates medical and chemodenervation for various movement disorders
